A Glimpse of Other Lives

film screening

The film covers the amateur cinematographic works of Madronita Andreu, an intellectual of the Catalan bourgeois born at the end of the 19th century. The daughter of the famous Dr. Andreu (famed for his cough syrup and tablets), she recorded her friends and family on her 16mm camera for more than 50 years. Madronita was born in Barcelona to a well-off industrialist family. From a very young age she was fascinated by inventions and machinery, and subsequently became devoted to photography and later film, which became her lifelong passion. Throughout her life, she devoted herself assiduously to filming her family and her surroundings. She looked at the world (her world) through the camera lens. Up until this point, there is nothing out of ordinary in her interests; the whims of an eccentric and determined lady. However, this woman, a descendent of painters, had talent. She knew how to compose, how to frame, and, above all, she had a perfect vision of how to the find interest and emotion in each scene. “A glimpse of other lives” presents a selection taken from over 900 film reels in 16mm, all shot by Madronita Andreu. In short, this film is an autobiography in images, perhaps the first of its kind in the history of film, spanning five decades from the 1920s right to the seventies.
