El Instituto Cervantes presenta la película "Retorno a Hansala" basada en hechos reales. Tom Gaisford y Rafael Quiros de la asociación Solidaridad directa, fundada a partir de los hechos narrados en la película, explicarán la experiencia y responderán a las preguntas del público.
Instituto Cervantes will screen "Return to Hansala", a movie by Chus Gutiérrez based on a true story. Tom Gaisford and Rafael Quiros from Solidaridad directa will join us after the screening. |

Una patera naufraga y deja una docena de cuerpos inertes en la playa y quién sabe cuántos más en el mar. Martín, que ronda los cuarenta, tiene una hija de doce años y se ha separado recientemente de su esposa; regenta un tanatorio en Algeciras y atraviesa innumerables problemas económicos y legales. Tras recibir una llamada de la Guardia Civil, se dirige al lugar del siniestro y, mientras recoge los cuerpos, ve un cadáver con un puño cerrado aprisionando un papel. Hay escrito un número de teléfono y Martín, ya en su despacho, llama. Al otro lado de la línea responde Leila, una mujer marroquí que trabaja en el horario nocturno en el mercado de abastos de Málaga. Los dos emprenderán un viaje inesperado.
A boat carrying a group of illegal immigrants sinks, leaving a dozen dead bodies lying on a Spanish beach. Martín -a man nearing his forties and the father of a twelve-year-old girl- has recently separated from his wife. He runs a funeral parlour in Algeciras and is beset by numerous economic and legal problems. After receiving a call from the Guardia Civil, he drives to the scene of the tragedy and, while collecting the dead bodies, he notices that one of them has a tight fist gripping a scrap of paper. The latter contains a telephone number. Back in his office, Martin calls that number and is answered at the other end of the line by Leila, a Moroccan woman who works at the wholesale food market in Málaga. Both Martin and Leila will embark together in an unexpected journey

Maika Makovski
Live in Whelan's
 Hay música que contiene todas las músicas, así es Maika Makovski; mallorquina con sangre andaluza y macedonia, que ha vivido en Nueva York y siempre vuelve a Barcelona. Maika es una mujer que compone, canta, toca la guitarra y el piano, una tía con carácter que hace canciones como sólo se deberían hacer: con pasión e intensidad. A veces confiesa que Prince es “una de las paredes maestras de mi caja de música” pero siempre deja hueco en esa virtuosa caja de Pandora para Neil Young, Ike & Tina Turner o Serge Gainsbourg. Por primera vez en Dublín, Maika presentará su tercer trabajo, grabado y producido por John Parish en Bristol y Bath.
Maika Makovski, Majorcan with Andalusian and Macedonian origins, who lived in New York and always comes back to Barcelona. Maika composes, sings, plays guitar and piano, she is a girl with character who makes songs the only way they should be made: with passion and intensity. Sometimes she confesses that Prince is “a master wall in her music box”, but she always leaves some room in this virtuoso Pandora’s Box for Neil Young, Ike & Tina Turner or Serge Gainsbourg. For the first time in Dublin, Maika will present her third album produced by John Parish in Bristol and Bath.

Love, Faith and Betrayal in Wartime Spain

En los años treinta Tom Burns era una estrella emergente en el mundo de la edición británica. Cuando se declaró la guerra, Burns se unió al Ministerio de Información, rama propagandística de los servicios secretos y en los años cuarenta fue enviado a Madrid como agregado de prensa de la Embajada británica. Allí, Burns utilizó su ingenio, su fe y su profundo amor a España en la propaganda anti nazi, con la intención de mantener a Franco fuera de la guerra y así proteger Gibraltar y el oeste del Mediterráneo.
In the 1930s Tom Burns was a rising star of British publishing. When war was declared, Burns joined the Ministry of Information, a propaganda wing of the secret services, and in 1940 he was sent to Madrid as press attaché to the British Embassy. There Burns used his considerable ingenuity, his faith and his deep love of Spain in the propaganda war against the Nazis, with the aim of keeping Franco out of the war, and so to protect Gibraltar and the western Mediterranean.

 El pasado 13 de noviembre nos dejó el director de cine Luis García Berlanga a la edad de 89 años. Sus películas forman parte de la historia de España y del cine mundial. Quizás la más conocida sea “Bienvenido Mr. Marshall”.
Pero no menos conocido que su amor al cine era su afición al erotismo. Él fue director, desde su creación en la editorial Tusquets, de la colección de literatura erótica “La Sonrisa Vertical” y del premio de literatura erótica de este mismo nombre.
Este mes, la biblioteca propone a sus lectores un acercamiento a este género literario, en honor a Berlanga, y como no, un repaso a su filmografía que también será recordada a comienzos del año próximo, en un ciclo de cine organizado por el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín.
On the 13th November, Spanish Film Maker Luis García Berlanga, passed away at the age of 89 years old. His films form an integral part of the histories of both Spain and of world cinema. Arguably, his most well-known film is “Welcome Mr. Marshall” (“Bienvenido Mr. Marshall”).
However, just as well known as his love for film, was his love for eroticism. He was director of the collection of erotic literature “La Sonrisa Vertical” (The Vertical Smile) since its creation in Tusquets publishing house, along with the subsequent award for erotic literature of the same name.
This month, here at the library we would like to invite our readers to get to know this literary genre, in honour of Berlanga, and, it goes without saying, revisit his body of films, which will also feature in a film cycle dedicated to the director in the new year, organised by Instituto Cervantes Dublin. |
