History and collections

The library at Instituto Cervantes in Dublin bears the name of the Spanish writer and critic Dámaso Alonso, who was awarded the Cervantes prize in 1978.

Dámaso Alonso is the author of the first translation into Spanish of James Joyce’s work "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" published in Madrid in 1926 by Biblioteca Nueva.

The library at Instituto Cervantes in Dublin opened to the public in 1995. It inherited its books from the previous Spanish Cultural Institute that had historically been sustained with donations from different public institutions. Since then, Instituto Cervantes has initiated an acquisition policy in order to update the collection and adapt it to the needs of its users.
