For the first time the Dublin Writers Festival has the pleasure of presenting a Spanish writer on behalf of the Instituto Cervantes Dublin. This year, Vicente Molina Foix, the winner of the 2007’ National Award for Fiction for his novel "El abrecartas" (Letteropener), will discuss some current issues with Nigerian writer Helon Habila and Southamerican writer Damon Galgut. To what extent does the national identity shape writers’ narrative style and thematic resource? Is the notion of ‘national writing’ still possible in the global cultural landscape?

Por primera vez en el Dublin Writers Festival, el Instituto Cervantes de Dublín invita a un escritor en español. Este año, Vicente Molina Foix, premio Nacional de Narrativa 2007 por su novela “El abrecartas”, hablará, junto a Helon Habila (Nigeria) y Damon Galgut (Sudáfrica), sobre la influencia de la historia, la política, los mitos y la memoria colectiva en la creación literaria: ¿hasta qué punto la identidad nacional influye en el estilo narrativo?, ¿es la noción de “escritura nacional” todavía posible en este mundo cultural global?
Vicente Molina Foix
has graduated in Art History from the
University of
London. He taught Spanish literature at
Oxford. Except his work in drama and critical writing, he is also a film director (his movie “Sagittarius” was launched in 2001).
His publications include: Museo provincial de los horrores, Busto (Barral Prize, 1973), La comunión de los atletas, Los padres viudos (Azorín Prize, 1983),
La Quincena Soviética (Herralde Prize, 1988), La misa de Baroja, La mujer sin cabeza and El vampiro de
la calle Méjico (Alfonso García Ramos Prize, 2002).
Worth highlighting are his splendid versions of the pieces of Shakespeare: Hamlet, King Lear and The merchant of
Venice, as well as his reviews of movies collected in El cine estilográfico (The stylographic cinema).

se graduó en Historia del Arte por la Universidad de Londres y fue profesor de literatura española en Oxford. Autor dramático, crítico y director de cine (su película Sagitario se estrenó en 2001), su labor literaria se ha desarrollado principalmente en el campo de
la novela. Sus principales publicaciones narrativas son: Museo provincial de los horrores, Busto (Premio Barral 1973), La comunión de los atletas, Los padres viudos (Premio Azorín 1983),
La Quincena Soviética (Premio Herralde 1988), La misa de Baroja, La mujer sin cabeza y El vampiro de
la calle Méjico (Premio Alfonso García Ramos 2002). Cabe también destacar muy especialmente sus espléndidas versiones de las piezas de Shakespeare: Hamlet, El rey Lear, El mercader de Venecia, así como sus reseñas de películas reunidas en El cine estilográfico.

Spanish Contemporary Avant-Garde Cinema, Happening & Interventional Art
Márgenes: Experimento y Praxis is a month of Spanish contemporary avant-garde art featuring a series of talks, experimental film screenings, multiple sound-screen environments, expanded cinema events, and interventions in the public space. Starting on June 12, Márgenes will take place at the National Gallery of Ireland, This is Not a Shop gallery, and different public locations in the city of Dublin. A special closing event with food and live music will take place at Phoenix Park on June 25.
Márgenes: Acontecimiento y praxis
es un mes de arte de vanguardia contemporáneo español que comprende una serie de charlas, proyecciones del cine experimental, proyecciones múltiples audiovisuales, eventos de cine expandido e intervenciones en el espacio público. A partir del 12 de junio, Márgenes tendrá lugar en la Galería Nacional de Irlanda, la galería This is Not a Shop y varios lugares públicos en la ciudad de Dublín. El evento de clausura, con música en vivo y comida, tendrá lugar en el Phoenix Park, el 25 de junio.

Essential Cinema: Albert Alcoz, Antoni Pinent
A very special series of film screened on a repertory basis, the Essential Cinema repertory consists of 3 programs and 30 titles assembled by Antoni Pinent (filmmaker, film-programmer, art curator) and Albert Alcoz (filmmaker, writer, plastic artist). It is an ambitious attempt to define the contemporary experimental film or art of cinema scene in Spain. Essential Cinema will feature Kinetic Landscapes –a program by Albert Alcoz which addresses forms of documentary, diary and essay in film-, Albert Alcoz: Partial Retrospective -featuring a series of recent films by and with Barcelona filmmaker Albert Alcoz-, and Cine Experimento –programmed by Antoni Pinent, which will look at different perspectives and aspects of contemporary avant-garde filmmaking in Spain-. A presentation talk by Antoni Pinent will precede the film program series.

El repertorio de Essential Cinema, ciclo de proyecciones que consiste en 3 programas y 30 títulos reunidos por Antoni Pinent (director y programador de cine, así como comisario de arte) y Albert Alcoz (director de cine, escritor y artista plástico), es un intento ambicioso que pretende definir el cine experimental contemporáneo y el arte cinematográfico en España. Essential Cinema mostrará Kinetic Landscapes (Paisajes cinéticos), un programa de Albert Alcoz que reúne diferentes formas de documental, diario y ensayo en el cine; Albert Alcoz: Retrospectiva parcial, que mostrará una serie de películas recientes del director de cine barcelonés Albert Alcoz; y Cine Experimento, comisariado por Antoni Pinent, que mostrará las diferentes perspectivas y aspectos de la filmación del cine de vanguardia contemporánea en España.

Darklight Festival: ANIMADRID
The Animadrid Festival has developed an interesting course in the presentation of the best international animation production in all its formats. Its tendency to find and promote both classic authors and young Spanish presenters enables the Instituto Cervantes to join its mission by spreading this tributary program around its centres. We will present three programs that cover the animation work of Catalan directors Jan Baca and Toni Garriga, the usage of plasticine by Pablo Llorens and the selection of the best contemporary productions in animation.
A Basque producer, Myriam Ballesteros, will present the first program of Spanish animations on June 27th at 3pm in the Light House Cinema.
Darklight Festival: ANIMADRID
El festival Animadrid ha consolidado una interesante trayectoria en la presentación de la mejor producción de animación internacional en todos sus formatos. Su vocación de recuperación y difusión de autores clásicos y jóvenes animadores españoles hace posible que el Instituto Cervantes se una a esta misión en la difusión de los programas de sus homenajeados en nuestra red de centros. Se presentan tres programas que recogen la obra de animación de los directores catalanes Jan Baca y Toni Garriga, el trabajo sobre animación con plastilina de Pablo Llorens, y una recopilación de las mejores producciones de las animadoras contemporáneas.
Myriam Ballesteros, realizadora y productora vasca, presentará el 27 de junio a las 15:00h, en el Light House Cinema, la primera sesión dedicada a las animadoras españolas.

Spanish Civil War Posters
The exhibition features the Spanish Civil War posters selected from the Pablo Iglesias Foundation, which collection exceeds today 2000 copies. It is regarded as an extraordinary testimony of the republican poster–making, mostly for its scope and variety of themes, authors, institutions and the publishing organizations. The republican model followed the pattern of the First World War’s posters, reinforcing the effectiveness of the message and resorting to imagination through the common motives of isolation, political symbols, but also education, hygiene and warnings against abuse that may lead to war. This allegiance appealed to the best war poster-makers that followed the aesthetic rules of vanguard art, especially the Russian constructivism that is very present in the exhibition.
Carteles de la Guerra Civil Española
Esta exposición recoge una selección de los Carteles de la Guerra Civil española de la colección que la Fundación Pablo Iglesias ha ido comprando desde su creación, y que hoy sobrepasa los 2.000 ejemplares. Constituye un testimonio extraordinario del cartelismo republicano, tanto por su amplitud como por la variedad de temas, autores, instituciones y organizaciones editoras que la componen. El cartel del bando republicano siguió la senda de la cartelística de la Primera Guerra Mundial, acrecentando la efectividad de los mensajes y recurriendo a la imaginación para ampliar los motivos tradicionales: alistamiento, símbolos políticos pero también llamadas a la educación, a la higiene, advertencias de los abusos que proliferan en las situaciones de guerra… Este bando recurrió a los mejores cartelistas de la guerra, que seguían los preceptos estéticos del arte de vanguardia, en especial del constructivismo ruso y que se hacen muy evidentes en esta selección.

Flamenco García: Reunion
The internationally renowned guitar virtuoso Garcia returns with a vengeance, his superb style and renowned technique weaving a path between pure flamenco and fusion that departs from the flamenco tradition of theme and variations. Garcia considered by some as a living legend, in a magical reunion evening not to be missed! Con maestro Salvador Andrades on Guitar (over 40 recordings include the soundtrack of The Mask of Zorro); José Parra -vocals, Vicente Amigo - lead singer, José Manuel Leon - guitar, Carmen Lineres, Lucas Gonzales on Cajon, Martin Deiton on Bass Guitar, and special guest the international flamenco dancer David Lozano.
Flamenco García: Reunion
El virtuoso guitarrista, internacionalmente conocido, García, vuelve con su magnífico estilo y técnica que tejen un camino entre el flamenco puro y la fusión. García, considerado por algunos como una leyenda viva, se reune en Dublín con algunas estrellas del flamenco para ofrecernos un concierto inolvidable. Maestro Salvador Andrades (guitarra), con más de 40 grabaciones entre las que se incluye la banda sonora de la Máscara de Zorro. José Parra, cantante principal con Vicente Amigo. José Manuel León, guitarrista principal con Carmen Lineres. Lucas al cajón; y como invitado especial el bailarín de flamenco internacional, David Lozano.

Since the 1980s, the panorama of Spanish music has seen the birth of a host of new styles of music with flamenco roots, but which have made forays into new genres, creating fusions with styles such as jazz, rock, pop, and latino rhythms. This month, we are offering you a selection of these new rhythms of the south, ranging from the legendary hits of Ketama, Pata Negra, and Kiko Veneno, right to the latest releases from Ojos de Brujo, Niña Pastori, Estrella Morente, El Bicho, and many more.
The month of June is the month of the arts in Dublin´s fair city. Both the Bloomsday celebrations and the Dublin Writers Festival will fill the city with literature. Here in the library, we will be joining in with the festivities with a selection of works by contemporary Irish authors translated into Spanish. We hope you will enjoy reading them.
